Light and fast are the 2 most common requirements when it comes to most peoples bike selection criteria. Comfort and price are also quite high up as influencing factors. Colour is important for some, but the absolute first decision to be made when buying a bike is the answer to the question, "what style of bike best suits the type of riding I envisage doing?"

There are very definitely "horses for courses". Bike styles that are very focused toward one type of riding or another and often just the name is sufficient to point you in the right direction and your decision is made subconsciously without you actually being aware that you had made it. A Road Bike for instance is pretty self explanatory, or if you call it a racer that too pretty well sums up what the bike is intended for. Likewise, the term, Mountain Bike should need no explanation, but just as off road 4 wheel drive vehicles can be driven on road so can their 2 wheeled equivalent. The name Hybrid is a little less specific, it is a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. Not as robust as a mountain bike but useable off road and not as light or fast as a road bike, but a good bike for riding on the road. A very popular type of bike for many people who ride on a variety of surfaces, but just a bit slow and sedate for anyone who enjoys some speed and a bike they can ride a bit aggressively.

Hybrid bikes have been a staple of the bike market for many years now, evolving into the fairly staid, comfortable style of bike like the Giant Cypress. Fantastic for many people who's comfort is the main buying criteria. But some people want something a bit sportier, but still with 700c wheels and widish tyres, a bike that is pretty fast but is rugged enough to handle some trails and paths. A cross between a Cypress style hybrid and a Cross City style flat bar road bike. But one that doesn't look like grandpa's bike.

Giant have recognised the growing interest in this style of bike and for the 2012 range have introduced the Roam range of bikes which will fill this void very nicely. The Roam is a bike that may well spend most of its time on road as a commuting bike, but will prove to be far more comfortable than the low posture positioning required from a road bike and yet not all that much slower. Road bikes are great for speed and distance, but if you like to ride on trails and dirt once in a while, the narrow tyres of a road bike aren't that suitable. Whereas the Roam has the perfect mix of stability, rugged durability, sporty riding position and can even be a bit of fun if you consider that it isn't all that much different from a 29er mountain bike. Just with narrower tyres.

The Roam XR 1 is the upper model in the Roam range of bikes, and is a bike that will single handedly satisfy the needs of many mountain bike or road bike riders who wished they had something a bit more versatile for some of their riding. It has a fluid formed, double butted, super light aluminium frame which is a great base on which Giant have assembled a range of high end Shimano components in a 3 x 10 format giving the lucky rider 30 gears to choose from. Enough both in number and range to get you up the steepest hill or keep up with guys on road bikes. The light weight suspension forks are adjustable and feature a lock out option so that it can be turned off when the going isn't that rough. With sealed bearing hubs, stainless steel spokes, alloy rims and hydraulic disc brakes, the Roam XR 1 just may be the bike that sees you put away the road bike and mountain bike, only to be brought out on those days when a specialist is required.

For 90% of the time this "hybrid hybrid" just may be the most perfectly versatile bike you've ridden.

2014 Giant Seek 1

In Melbourne there are bike paths running in almost every direction. If you wish to explore, you can travel round most of Melbourne without need of roads.

The Giant Seek has been developed as an ideal bike for commuting, exploring bike paths and as a general run-around. There seems to be a rapidly developing interest in lightweight, fast commuters and the Seek answers this demand admirably. But it is much more than this, while it is of course very practical, it also looks so good. Whenever you ride it anywhere it seems to have that ability to draw admiring glances. It is probably a waste to confine it to the bike paths, maybe you could park it outside the coffee shop and take in a little of that admiration.

The Seek 1 has a lightweight, top-of-the range frame and offers it at a price that your hip-pocket will smile at! With the same light weight ALUXX SL aluminium frame used in the Cross City 1 and 2, this superior alloy offers 18% more tensile strength than Giant's other proprietary alloy, ALUXX, used in the Seek 2 and 3. The end result? A frame made of thin-walled tubing that is both light and agile while retaining all the strength and durability of a heavier frame. The bike is sleek, yet robust. It is ideal for pretty much any riding other than racing or off-road use. It has a wide gear range to handle any sort of terrain. Because it has a tough wheel set it can be used over all types of surfaces, whether they be gravel, grass or paved. The bike is also set-up to take a rear rack so that you can load it up if need be. Most people will love the really clean look of the Seek, so may be hesitant to add anything that will detract from the superb lines of the bike.

The brakes are Shimano hydraulic discs, a really responsive set of brakes, perfect if you are commuting or carrying any loads. The confidence that a great set of brakes gives is hard to describe, it is a great feeling knowing that you can stop quickly under any conditions, even in adverse weather conditions. The equipment is Shimano Deore. Shimano designed this for upper recreation, so you can be confident that the gear changing will be precise, with no missed changes, even if you are relatively new to cycling. Simply stated it will make changing gear a breeze.

As with any bike we sell it comes with 12 months free service. This is not a limited sevice, we will do what is required to ensure that you are absolutely satisfied with your new purchase. This is a really lovely bike, best come and have a test ride.

Giant Seek 2 2014

2014 Giant Seek 2

[new text coming soon]

The Giant Seek 2 is definitely not your run-of-the-mill commuting bike. It is made for city commuting, but still has some mountain bike components to make it stronger and the level of terrain to explore is a higher range than most bikes of this type.

Taking a second to look at the different hazards of city riding compared to that of a mountain biker, for example, we find a few different parts of the bike more important. In the city you have a lot of people/cars/building etc. all packed into smaller spaces, making braking and steering very important features... Giant did keep that in mind when they designed this bike. The bike has disc brakes for smooth, efficient braking, a lightweight frame making it easier to maneuvre and steer, reflective paint making you more visible, a metal guard on the top tube to prevent scratching, puncture-resistant tyres and Giant double wall rims for sturdiness.

Again the riding position is designed with urban commuting and recreational riding in mind. The seating position is efficient, yet sufficiently upright to have good vision at all times. It will not suit you if you have back or neck problem and need an upright position, but if you want to be able to really push hard climbing hills, yet be able to see what the traffic is doing around you, the riding position is ideal.

But to get right down to the nitty-gritty, the bike rides really well, it simply feels great. People who take this baby out on a test ride always come back with a smile on their face. Now, if that doesn't make you jump in your car to come and test ride one, then how about the fact that it's now just $799!

2012 Giant Cypress 1

The Giant Cypress range is, without a doubt, our most popular hybrid range. Let me explain why, starting with this bike, the Giant Cypress 1.

On the Cypress 1, we find a number of brilliant features which all add up to a perfectly comfortable and swift ride. We'll start with the frame which is an ALUXX formed alloy comfort frame. Giant designed ALUXX frames to create a lightweight, stiff frame with minimum weight, but maximum strength. On this particular Cypress, the forks are at a very small angle, making the steering a lot easier and faster, without losing control. The Cypress has RST Neon 60mm suspension forks. The Neon forks are make for urban commuting and fitness. But not only does it have these quality forks, it has lockout as well. This means when you are going up a hill, you can simply turn the knob at the top of the forks and switch off the suspension.

Suspension while hill climbing can absorb a lot of your power, so this is a simple way to get the most out of your pedalling up hills. Once at the top of the hill, simple turn the knob again and the suspension will kick in! The drivetrain is Shimano Alivio (a recreational mountain bike gear system) for reliability and handling. And the Alloy V brakes are known for efficiency and reliability.

The bike is designed to maximise comfort. The saddle is plush and wide enough to ensure a very comfortable ride. The saddle is supported on a suspension seat pillar, which irons out the most of the impact if you accidentally hit a pothole or the like. It may sound insignificant, but well designed grips add considerably to the comfort level, and this bike certainly has these. The handlebars can be raised or lowered to achieve the ideal riding position for your body type and preferences. You see now why this bike is so popular? Essentially it's the perfect comfort bike.

Just with narrower tyres.

Such a versatile bike, the Roam rides well on roads and can take curb jump every now and then as well as some slipping and sliding if you push it hard on the cycle paths. Giant have done a really good job selecting the most suitable components, with 700c wheels and tyres that are wide enough with some tread for average trails, but narrow enough for good road speed, the Roam is a bike for both worlds of cycling and with 7 sizes over both a mens and ladies range, the Roam will suit the riding situations and needs of many riders. With 27 speed gearing the Roam really is a go anywhere bike and could also be considered as a pretty good touring option. Not for hardcore mountain trails. Not for racing along Beach Road. But perfect for that in between riding many of us do. Some off road, some on. Some slower riding but also times when speed is required.
